Wrote about it in this 6\/18\/2021 post \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.com\/2021\/06\/18\/how-to-turn-a-314-57-chromebook-into-a-fedora-linux-laptop-tablet-sketchbook-chromebook-series-part-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>How to turn a $314.57 Chromebook into a Fedora Linux Laptop\/Tablet\/Sketchbook \u2013 Chromebook series part 5<\/i><\/a> \u2013 on my <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Linux Newbie \u2013 since 1996<\/a> blog.<\/p>\n<p>At that time I was using a 32GB microSDHC card whilst having Chrome OS Flex (<i>formerly CloudReady OS<\/i>) installed on the Chromebook&#8217;s default 32 GB eMMC drive. <i>If I recall correctly<\/i>, trying to get any Linux OS installed on that eMMC drive was difficult, but did manage to get 2-3 Distros installed over time. I haven&#8217;t checked to see if it meets <a href=\"https:\/\/mrchromebox.tech\/#home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>MrChromebox.tech<\/b><\/a> recommended requirements or if maybe Chromebooks has made <u><b>FULLY<\/b><\/u> installing any Linux Distro onto Chromebooks easier since my earlier tests.<\/p>\n<p><i>However<\/i>, it has the same Intel Celeron 3965Y CPU as mine, and CPU&#8217;s are one of the ways of knowing if MrChromebox.tech&#8217;s script will work on changing the BIOS. The script removes the Chromebook&#8217;s original BIOS, and installs a new BIOS. Last year, I was <u>unable<\/u> to install Linux onto the 2 HP Chromebooks I was testing, i.e., <u><b>FULLY<\/b><\/u> installed &#8216;n not the Chrome OS installing some ancient Ubuntu version.<\/p>\n<p>The Intel Celeron 3965Y CPU has a <a href=\"https:\/\/ark.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/ark\/products\/122698\/intel-celeron-processor-3965y-2m-cache-1-50-ghz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kaby Lake Code<\/a> name. MrChromebox.tech&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mrchromebox.tech\/#devices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Supported Devices<\/b><\/a> page lists all ChromeOS devices that his firmware script works on, and here is my Samsung Chromebook Plus listing:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-707 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kaby-lake.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"777\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kaby-lake.jpg 690w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/kaby-lake-444x500.jpg 444w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>MrChromebox.tech says that &#8216;<i>The best resource for running Linux is the GalliumOS <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.galliumos.org\/Hardware_Compatibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Hardware Compatibility<\/b><\/i><\/a><i> List.<\/i>&#8216; He is just using the discontinued <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GalliumOS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GalliumOS<\/a> as a &#8220;resource&#8221; for his firmware script in order to install other newer Linux Distros, e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/spins.fedoraproject.org\/en\/cinnamon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Fedora 37 Cinnamon <\/i><i><b>SPIN<\/b><\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-708 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1a-DE-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1a-DE-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1a-DE-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1a-DE-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1a-DE.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Post_Fedora_37_installation\"><\/span>Post Fedora 37 installation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I found <a href=\"https:\/\/mrchromebox.tech\/#home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>MrChromebox.tech<\/b><\/a> to be easiest way to install a <b><u>FULL<\/u><\/b> Linux Distro onto a Chromebook. Be sure to follow his <a href=\"https:\/\/mrchromebox.tech\/#devices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Supported Devices<\/b><\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>Chromebooks have an Auto Update Expiration (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/chrome\/a\/answer\/6220366?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>AUE<\/b><\/a>) date, and after that date they stop getting updates (<i>including security updates<\/i>). That was a main reason for my <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.com\/buy-low-or-byoc-build-your-own-computer-2\/chromebooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Chromebooks<\/b><\/a> tests last year. Try buying a Fedora 37 Linux Laptop\/Tablet\/Sketchbook, wid a Touch Screen FHD LED Display @ 1920\u00d71200, for $314.57. <u><b>Try buying any Linux laptop for $314.57<\/b><\/u>. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>I have a Dell XPS 13 9310 lappy, named &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.com\/buy-low-or-byoc-build-your-own-computer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>XPS13<\/b><\/i><\/a>&#8216;, running Windows 11 Pro &#8216;n it is my main laptop computer; however, it was a <u><b>lot more<\/b><\/u> than $314.57. &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.com\/buy-low-or-byoc-build-your-own-computer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Sam<\/b><\/i><\/a>&#8216;, the converted Samsung Chromebook Plus, doesn&#8217;t get a lot of use, but is one heck of a Linux Laptop\/Tablet\/Sketchbook!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-709 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1b-system-info.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1b-system-info.jpg 800w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1b-system-info-500x393.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1b-system-info-768x603.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t ever under estimate Intel&#8217;s Celeron processors, and this Celeron 3965Y runs Fedora 37 as fast as it needs to go. Not as &#8216;<i>Snappy<\/i>&#8216; as Fedora 37 runs on the Intel Core i7-8700 CPU in the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.com\/buy-low-or-byoc-build-your-own-computer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Rose<\/b><\/i><\/a>&#8216; main Linux test computer, but plenty fast enough.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The battery lasts forever in this converted Chromebook, and the 32GB eMMC drive has plenty of room left over.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-710 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1c-32-gb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"775\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1c-32-gb.jpg 775w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1c-32-gb-500x341.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/1c-32-gb-768x523.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 775px) 100vw, 775px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If I need extra space for pics, docs, etc. &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.com\/buy-low-or-byoc-build-your-own-computer-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Sam<\/b><\/i><\/a>&#8216; has a microSDHC card slot.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of cheaper priced Chromebooks, especially if you don&#8217;t need a Touch Screen.
