I have been using Porteus Linux since March of 2022, but have found it to be the most interesting Linux OS I have ever used (<i><u>since 1996<\/u><\/i>), and it has already become my favorite &#8216;<i>Working<\/i>&#8216; Linux OS. I had been using the Porteus 5.0rc3 until Porteus 5.0 was released on July 3rd, 2022. The 5.0 release candidate 3 was fine, but the Porteus 5.0 final release has been smoother &#8216;n snappier than 5.0rc3 was. Porteus&#8217; Developers\/Team have done an excellent job!<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/index.php\/2023\/06\/26\/porteus-5-0-cinnamon-part-1-refresh-of-old-review\/\"><i><b>Part 1<\/b><\/i><\/a> we covered creating a fat32 \u2018<i>Live<\/i>\u2018 Porteus USB, and then using its <a href=\"https:\/\/gparted.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GParted<\/a> app to prep a Target drive.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/index.php\/2023\/07\/03\/porteus-5-0-cinnamon-part-2-installation-fat32-plus-ext4-or-fat32\/\"><i><b>Part 2<\/b><\/i><\/a> we prepped a Target drive wid <a href=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3c-GParted-prep-of-128-GB.jpg\"><b>two partitions<\/b><\/a> \u2013 a 360 MiB fat32 partition &amp; an 114.26 GiB ext4 partition. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.porteus.org\/index.php?sid=f009b4373473c80be406f6c552e261d6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Forum<\/b><\/a> is probably the best source for quick and helpful information. Here is the actual <a href=\"http:\/\/porteus.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Porteus Home<\/b><\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p>Username for root is <b>root<\/b> and password is <b>toor<\/b>. User name for guest is <b>guest<\/b> and password is <b>guest<\/b>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"First_Boot_Up\"><\/span>First Boot Up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>My guide is for creating a <i>Fulltime Linux Root User<\/i> Porteus OS. I can&#8217;t stand annoying <i>\u201cAuthenticate\u201d popups<\/i> or other \u2018<i>Pesky Passwords<\/i>\u2019 requirements. What are &#8220;Authenticate&#8221; popups? They show up looking for your password when you try to do something w\/o &#8216;<i>T<\/i><i>heir<\/i>&#8216; permission:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2860 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/authenicates.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/authenicates.jpg 616w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/authenicates-500x277.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re probably using the mouse when one pops up, which means you have to stop using the mouse, then move to the keyboard, then type in your password, and then move back to the mouse. Slows down the OS users workflow. &#8216;<em>Think<\/em>&#8216; Passwordless instead&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>However, the guest section can always be used if you prefer, and a standard user can also be created if you want one.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2863 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/boot-options.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"616\" height=\"346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/boot-options.jpg 616w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/boot-options-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 616px) 100vw, 616px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s close to what the Graphical menu window looks like, but I haven&#8217;t been able to get a pic of the real one, i.e. I <em>borrowed<\/em> that one. \ud83d\ude09 If you&#8217;re not sure what to do, just let it boot into guest session for you.<\/p>\n<p>There are 3 Options I have used in that Graphical menu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option 1 \u2013 Graphics mode:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2865 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-1-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Graphics mode is the default option in the Graphical menu. If you do nothing to the settings, it will boot into the guest user section automatically.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option 2 \u2013 Text mode:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2866 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-2-500x281.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That option boots into a TTY console (<i>like a terminal or command prompt<\/i>), where you can login as either <b>root<\/b> or <b>guest<\/b>. <em><u>Sometimes<\/u><\/em>, you may make a mistake or a computer <i>glitch<\/i> happens and you end up at the TTY console&#8230;<i>no worries<\/i>. Just remember \u2013 Username for root is <b>root<\/b> and password is <b>toor<\/b>. User name for guest is <b>guest<\/b> and password is <b>guest<\/b>. Then the prompt will look for you to type in &#8211; <b>startx<\/b><b> <\/b>&#8211; before system will boot into the desktop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Option 3 \u2013 Press [Tab] to edit options:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2868 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-3.jpg 767w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/option-3-500x419.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 100vw, 767px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t ever let an Operating System &#8216;<i>Bully<\/i>&#8216; or intimidate you! \ud83d\ude09 This option may be a tad &#8216;<i>Tricky<\/i>&#8216; at first, so don&#8217;t worry if you end up at the TTY console.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>One more time<\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At that Graphical window, &#8216;<i>Press <\/i><b>Tab<\/b><i> to edit options<\/i>&#8216; so you can login as root during bootup.<\/p>\n<p>After hitting the [Tab] key an \u201cedit options\u201d pops up at bottom of Graphical menu screen. I don\u2019t have a pic of it, but it\u2019s like a <u>wide \u2018n thin terminal<\/u> where you can type into. Press the [Space] key, which opens a space between the text in that edit option line \u2013 probably next to something like: \/boot\/syslinux\/vmlinux changes =\/porteus initrd=\/boot\/syslinux\/initrd.xz \u2013 you want one space between .xz and <b>login=root<\/b> text you will type in.<\/p>\n<p><b>Example<\/b>: \/boot\/syslinux\/vmlinux changes =\/porteus initrd=\/boot\/syslinux\/initrd.xz login=root<\/p>\n<p>As a <i>Fulltime Linux Root User<\/i> on all my &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/index.php\/my-computers\/\"><i><b>Computers<\/b><\/i><\/a>&#8216;, I go to the <b>porteus.cfg<\/b> file after First boot into the new desktop, and add the l<b>ogin=root<\/b> there, so from now on it will automatically boot into the desktop.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Editing_the_porteuscfg_file\"><\/span>Editing the <b>porteus.cfg<\/b> file<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Graphical menu options are fine to have around, but I just want to automatically boot into the desktop as <b>root<\/b> after that First Boot Up. To achieve that objective, we&#8217;re going to open 3 new windows: <b>1)<\/b> that 377 MB fat32 partition (<b>sda1<\/b> for me). <b>2)<\/b> then the <b>boot<\/b> folder. <b>3)<\/b> then the <b>syslinux<\/b> folder. Like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2870 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4a-open-folders-to-edit-cfg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1344\" height=\"945\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4a-open-folders-to-edit-cfg.jpg 1344w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4a-open-folders-to-edit-cfg-500x352.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4a-open-folders-to-edit-cfg-1024x720.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4a-open-folders-to-edit-cfg-768x540.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1344px) 100vw, 1344px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>After you learn how to find the <b>porteus.cfg<\/b> file, you can do it w\/o having to open folders in new windows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We are now in the <b>syslinux<\/b> folder, where we can just click on the <b>porteus.cfg<\/b> file to open it &#8211; like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2872 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4b-open-porteus.cfg_.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1258\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4b-open-porteus.cfg_.jpg 1258w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4b-open-porteus.cfg_-500x219.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4b-open-porteus.cfg_-1024x448.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4b-open-porteus.cfg_-768x336.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1258px) 100vw, 1258px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then scroll down the <b>porteus.cfg<\/b> file until you get to the &#8220;<b>LABEL GRAPHICAL<\/b>&#8221; section:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2874 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4c-loginroot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"662\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4c-loginroot.jpg 631w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/4c-loginroot-477x500.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Look for the &#8220;INITRD&#8221; line, hit [Space] key at the end of that line, and then add <b>login=root<\/b> to it. Double-check that you have it right, then <strong><u>save<\/u><\/strong> it, then click close and exit the window.
