Want to try Porteus v5.0?<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-2'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-3\" href=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/index.php\/2023\/06\/26\/porteus-5-0-cinnamon-part-1-refresh-of-old-review\/#Conclusion\" >Conclusion<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Refresh_of_old_Review\"><\/span>Refresh of old Review<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/forum.porteus.org\/viewtopic.php?f=35&amp;p=88441#p88441\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Porteus-v5.0 is released!<\/b><\/a>&#8221; \u2013 I&#8217;d been running <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?http:\/\/porteus.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Porteus<\/b><\/a> 5.0rc3 Cinnamon since around 3\/31\/2022 and almost immediately placed it as my #<a href=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/index.php\/linux\/karmis-top-10-linux-distros\/\"><strong>1a<\/strong><\/a> Linux OS\u2014just ahead of now #<a href=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/index.php\/linux\/karmis-top-10-linux-distros\/\"><strong>1b<\/strong><\/a> Fedora Linux. I was very excited about the new release, and have been <em>testing &amp; using<\/em> it for almost a year now. \ud83d\udc4c\ud83d\udc4d<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Most of the action \u2018n info seems to happen on their <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/forum.porteus.org\/index.php\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Forum<\/b><\/a>, where I have received loads of help \u2018n advice. It is also where Porteus v5.0\u2019s release was announced:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2770 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/announcement.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"801\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/announcement.jpg 801w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/announcement-500x257.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/announcement-768x394.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be reviewing the Cinnamon DE, which can be downloaded from one of these <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?http:\/\/porteus.org\/porteus-mirrors.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Mirrors<\/b><\/a>, and my download was: <b>Porteus-CINNAMON-v5.0-x86_64.iso<\/b> @ just 360 MBs\u2026change Mirrors if you don\u2019t find the correct Porteus v5.0 release you\u2019re looking for. There are 8 desktop options to choose from.<\/p>\n<p>My main review will focus on creating a fat32 partition &amp; an ext4 partition. The other option is using just one big fat32 partition, but I prefer the ext4 option. Here\u2019s a shot of my prep work wid <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/gparted.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GParted<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2773 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1a-GParted-prep.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1a-GParted-prep.jpg 777w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1a-GParted-prep-500x344.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1a-GParted-prep-768x529.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s on a 16 GB SanDisk Flair USB, but that fat32 partition at around 350-360 MBs has worked well even on my 128 GB SanDisk Ultra Fit USB for the Porteus 5.0rc3 installation. Will probably replace that 5.0rc3 version on that 128 GB USB wid the new 5.0 release this week\u2026<i>after some more tests<\/i>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Windows_User_Want_to_try_Porteus_v50\"><\/span>Windows User? Want to try Porteus v5.0?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I recommend using <i><b>SanDisk <\/b><\/i>or<b><\/b><i><b> Samsung USBs<\/b><\/i> for the Target installation. Just about any USB will do for the temp fat32 \u2018<i>Live<\/i>\u2018 Porteus USB. We are going to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/href.li\/?https:\/\/gparted.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GParted<\/a> app there to prep the main Target disk, <i><u>as shown above<\/u><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is how we create the \u2018<i>Live<\/i>\u2018 Porteus USB, from the downloaded <b>Porteus-CINNAMON-v5.0-x86_64.iso<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2775 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2a-open-ISO-n-USB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"855\" height=\"722\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2a-open-ISO-n-USB.jpg 855w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2a-open-ISO-n-USB-500x422.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2a-open-ISO-n-USB-768x649.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 855px) 100vw, 855px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We have opened both the fat32 USB folder\/drive &amp; the Download folder w\/ the Porteus ISO in it. Now, click on the <b>Porteus-CINNAMON-v5.0-x86_64.iso<\/b> so we can open it, and then <u>Copy<\/u> the folders to the fat32 USB:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2777 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2b-copied-files-to-USB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"865\" height=\"664\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2b-copied-files-to-USB.jpg 865w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2b-copied-files-to-USB-500x384.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2b-copied-files-to-USB-768x590.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That fat32 USB can now be used as either a \u2018<i>Live<\/i>\u2018 Porteus USB <b>*OR*<\/b> the fully installed Porteus-v5.0 Cinnamon OS.<\/p>\n<p>Windows won\u2019t let you format a USB larger than 32 GBs wid fat32. For USBs over 32 GBs, the choices are NTFS or exFAT:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2780 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2c-fat32-exfat.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"579\" height=\"499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2c-fat32-exfat.jpg 579w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/2c-fat32-exfat-500x431.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Linux can do fat32 \u2018n NTFS, but most Linuxes (\u2018<i>n GParted<\/i>) can\u2019t do exFAT; however, I am directing this review towards Windows users (<i>mostly<\/i>), wid a focus on creating a fat32 partition &amp; an ext4 partition on a Target USB drive.<\/p>\n<p>Enough for now\u2026if you\u2019re interested, gather the USBs \u2018n a Porteus ISO (<i>your choice of DEs<\/i>), and see how to work wid Linux \u2018n Windows.<\/p>\n<p>This is just a short post, since I wanted to get started immediately on a review of Porteus 5.0 Cinnamon, and am extremely excited! \\o\/ \u2018<i>Hippity hip Hoorah<\/i>\u2018 \\o\/<\/p>\n<p>\u2026<em>to be continued<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Doing a &#8216;<em>Refresh<\/em>&#8216; of a series of posts from last year\u2014<em>from<\/em> an older WordPress.com blog that I recently made &#8216;<em>Private<\/em>&#8216;, and may eventually delete it.<\/p>\n<p>I had been &#8216;<em>Tinkering<\/em>&#8216; w\/ Linux since 1996, but got serious w\/ it on that blog starting on January 6, 2019.
