Since 2005\/2006 I have purchased $60-$90 motherboards for my builds, but decided to \u2018<i>splurge<\/i>\u2019 on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/us\/motherboards-components\/motherboards\/prime\/prime-z790m-plus-d4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>ASUS Prime Z790M-PLUS<\/b><\/a> D4 mATX MoBo \u2013 $171.89 + $12.03 Tax = $183.92.<\/p>\n<p>Requirements were \u2013 Micro ATX, Intel Z790, LGA 1700, and 1Gb LAN motherboard. I went to BIOS &gt; Advanced &gt; PCH-FW Configuration and changed setting to <b>enable Discrete <\/b><b>TPM<\/b> from <b>enable Firmware TPM<\/b>. I <i><u>believe<\/u><\/i> (??) the BIOS was outdated at that time because the default setting is <b>enable Firmware TPM<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><i>Anyway<\/i>, Windows installed after I booted back into the installer, and I updated the BIOS soon after. The default setting stayed at <b>enable Firmware TPM<\/b> after another BIOS update also.<\/p>\n<p>During installation I also discovered that the ETHERNET connection wasn\u2019t recognized, and a USB Wireless Adapter had to be added for an internet connection.<\/p>\n<p>Other than those two issues the installation went smoothly.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Driver_Tools_%E2%80%93_PRIME_Z790M-PLUS_D4\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/us\/motherboards-components\/motherboards\/prime\/prime-z790m-plus-d4\/helpdesk_download\/?model2Name=PRIME-Z790M-PLUS-D4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Driver &amp; Tools<\/a> \u2013 PRIME Z790M-PLUS D4<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2743 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/expand-drivers-tools.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/expand-drivers-tools.jpg 750w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/expand-drivers-tools-500x246.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Installing ASUS Z790M PLUS D4 drivers properly requires a little work. I went to the Driver &amp; Tools support page for BIOS &amp; Drivers. Remember to \u201c<b>EXPAND ALL \u2013<\/b>\u201d in order to see the full choice of options for either Driver &amp; Tools or BIOS &amp; FIRMWARE.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the basic order I went in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>1<\/b>) Intel LAN Driver<\/li>\n<li><b>2<\/b>) Intel Chipset Driver, Intel SerialIO Software, and Intel Rapid Storage Technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Number 3 &amp; 4 will be needed for latest BIOS <\/b>&amp; updating MEI drivers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>3<\/b>) Intel Management Engine Interface<\/li>\n<li><b>4<\/b>) ME firmware UpdateTool<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I needed the <b>Intel LAN Driver<\/b> for an ETHERNET connection, so added it first. It appears ASUS is working to fix the issues for this board, since I have noticed the options changing quite often.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Device Manager<\/b> (<i>under Control Panel<\/i>) showed about six driver issues \u2013 adding the <b>Intel Chipset Driver<\/b>, <b>Intel SerialIO Software<\/b>, and <b>Intel Rapid Storage Technology<\/b> options fixed those issues.<\/p>\n<p>To add the latest BIOS update I needed to add the <b>Intel Management Engine Interface<\/b> first, and then use the <b>ME firmware UpdateTool<\/b> to update the MEI driver. Then I installed the latest BIOS.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"PRIME_Z790M-PLUS_D4pdf\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dlcdnets.asus.com\/pub\/ASUS\/mb\/LGA1700\/PRIME%20Z790M-PLUS%20D4\/E21165_PRIME_Z790M-PLUS_D4_UM_V2_WEB.pdf?model=PRIME%20Z790M-PLUS%20D4-CSM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PRIME Z790M-PLUS D4.pdf<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Two new \u2018<i>Thangs<\/i> I discovered on this MoBo \u2013 <b>20. Thunderbolt\u2122 (USB4\u00ae) header<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2747 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Thunderbolt-header-500x422.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Thunderbolt-header-500x422.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Thunderbolt-header.jpg 727w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asus.com\/us\/motherboards-components\/motherboards\/accessories\/thunderboltex-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>ASUS ThunderboltEX 4<\/strong><\/a> expansion card connects to that header\u2014tho I\u2019ll probably never buy it, <i>but it is still early<\/i>. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>The second \u2018<i>Thang<\/i> is \u2013 <b>8. USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C\u00ae Front Panel connector<\/b>:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2746 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1a-USB-3.2-Gen-1-Type-C-500x412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1a-USB-3.2-Gen-1-Type-C-500x412.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1a-USB-3.2-Gen-1-Type-C.jpg 702w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This \u2018<i>Thang<\/i> I really liked, and immediately purchased the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07T5QQZG4?psc=1&amp;ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>EZDIY-FAB<\/b><\/a> 5.25in 10Gbps USB 3.1 Gen2 Hub and Type-C Port, Front Panel USB Hub for it. Probably never use the charging ports, but I really needed a Type-C port on the front of my computer, and some fast \u2018n handy USB ports also. I couldn\u2019t find many options for the USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C\u00ae Front Panel connector, but the EZDIY-FAB will do for now. \ud83d\udc4d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2750 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1b-FP-module-connectors.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"806\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1b-FP-module-connectors.jpg 806w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1b-FP-module-connectors-500x250.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1b-FP-module-connectors-768x384.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 806px) 100vw, 806px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The board\u2019s connector is apparently rated at just 5Gbps, but still fast.
