Its main goal is to be super fast, small, portable, modular and immutable (if the user wants so).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s already pre-configured for basic usage, including lightweight applications for each one of the 6 desktop environments available. No browser is included, but an app store is provided so you can download the most popular browsers, as well as Steam, VirtualBox, Nvidia drivers, office suite, multilib lite, messengers, emulators, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the box PorteuX can open basically any multimedia file. Hardware acceleration is enabled by default for machines with Intel, AMD or Nvidia cards (for Nvidia cards it&#8217;s required to download Nvidia driver from the app store).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Porteus 5.0 Cinnamon is one of my <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.wordpress.com\/karmis-top-10-linux-distros-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Favorite<\/b><\/i><\/a> Linux Distros, and is in fact my main working &#8216;<i>Secondary<\/i>&#8216; OS\u2014Win11 Pro is my primary OS. <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.porteus.org\/viewtopic.php?f=48&amp;t=10697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>PorteuX 0.3<\/b><\/a><b> <\/b>is similar, but wid some very interesting &#8216;<i>Twists<\/i>&#8216; of its own.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_To_Use\"><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/porteux\/porteux#how-to-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How To Use<\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I love working wid these &#8216;<i>Modular<\/i>&#8216; Linux OSes \u2013 moving modules around in order to quickly create a fully functioning portable OS.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Snip<\/i> .. PorteuX is a modular system so it doesn&#8217;t require a normal setup\/installer. You can simply copy the ISO content to your media storage and run either porteux-installer-for-linux.run or porteux-installer-for-windows.exe (depending on which system you&#8217;re running) to make the unit bootable. It&#8217;s simple like that. Avoid ISO installer applications such as Rufus or Etcher because by default they set the bootable unit to be read-only. For more details, please read install.txt file in the root folder of the ISO.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Setting_up_PorteuX_03\"><\/span>Setting up <a href=\"https:\/\/forum.porteus.org\/viewtopic.php?f=48&amp;t=10697\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PorteuX 0.3<\/a><b> <\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Modular OS systems are incredibly flexible (<i>great ones are\u2014anyway<\/i>), i.e., there are usually several++ ways of setting one up, IMHO, and here is how I did it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>I used <a href=\"https:\/\/gparted.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GParted<\/a> to prep a 16GB SanDisk Ultra Flair USB:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2515 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1a-GParted-prep.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1a-GParted-prep.jpg 777w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1a-GParted-prep-500x345.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1a-GParted-prep-768x530.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Created a 33 MiB fat32 partition, and used the rest for an ext4 partition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Open whichever PorteuX iso you are going to use:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2517 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1b-Gnome44-open.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"653\" height=\"886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1b-Gnome44-open.jpg 653w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1b-Gnome44-open-369x500.jpg 369w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 653px) 100vw, 653px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>I only use the EFI, boot, and porteux folders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Open the 33 MiB fat32 partition (<i>mine is sdc1<\/i>) in new window:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2519 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1ca-Copy-EFI-boot-to-sdc1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"649\" height=\"888\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1ca-Copy-EFI-boot-to-sdc1.jpg 649w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1ca-Copy-EFI-boot-to-sdc1-365x500.jpg 365w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 649px) 100vw, 649px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Copy the EFI &amp; boot folders to the fat32 partition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Open the ext4 partition (<i>sdc2<\/i>) created wid GParted in a new window:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2521 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1cb-Copy-porteus-to-sdc2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"651\" height=\"882\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1cb-Copy-porteus-to-sdc2.jpg 651w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1cb-Copy-porteus-to-sdc2-369x500.jpg 369w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 651px) 100vw, 651px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Copy the porteux folder to the ext4 partition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m the<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.wordpress.com\/2020\/10\/21\/how-to-become-a-fulltime-linux-root-user\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Root User<\/b><\/i><\/a> <strong>on all my computers, so I edited the porteux.cfg file to bypass the other login options:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2523 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1d-porteux.cfg-EDIT.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"662\" height=\"835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1d-porteux.cfg-EDIT.jpg 662w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/1d-porteux.cfg-EDIT-396x500.jpg 396w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Open the fat32 partition (<i>sdc1<\/i>) window again \u2013 then <b>boot<\/b> &gt; <b>syslinux<\/b> &gt; <b>porteux.cfg<\/b> file. Scroll down to the <b>LABEL graphical<\/b> section and add <b>login=root<\/b> to either the APPEND line or the INITRD line.
