Vanilla OS is an immutable and atomic Ubuntu Linux-based Point Release distribution, that receives updates at the right time, neither before nor after, without sacrificing security and functionality<\/i>&#8216;. It uses the latest <u>stable<\/u> Linux Kernel &#8216;n has an &#8216;<i>integrated driver management, whether it&#8217;s an AMD\u00ae, Intel\u00ae, or NVIDIA\u00ae GPU<\/i>&#8216;. I had a NVIDIA GPU and installing the driver was a breeze. Used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ventoy.net\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ventoy<\/a> on one &#8216;n <a href=\"https:\/\/www.balena.io\/etcher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etcher<\/a> on the other to create the bootable USB&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Installation took only <u>2-minutes<\/u>, but post installation setup &amp; updates took longer.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Post_Installation\"><\/span>Post Installation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned, there are &#8216;<i>all kinds of Linux OSes out there<\/i>&#8216; \u2014 and will add to that fact that there is also all kinds of Linux Package Managers out there. Linus Torvalds says <a href=\"https:\/\/itsfoss.com\/desktop-linux-torvalds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Fragmentation is Why Linux Hasn\u2019t Succeeded on Desktop<\/b><\/a>: \u2018<i>I still wish we were better at having a standardize desktop that goes across all the distributions \u2026 It\u2019s more of a personal annoyance how the <\/i><i><u><b>fragmentation<\/b><\/u><\/i><i> of the different vendors have, I think, held the desktop back a bit \u2026 It seems to be that Chromebooks and Android are the paths towards the desktop<\/i>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Linus Torvalds: Fragmentation is Why Desktop Linux Is Behind [4K]\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VHFdoFKDuQA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><i>Basically<\/i>, <u><b>everything<\/b><\/u> about Linux is fragmented \u2014 <em>seriously<\/em>. I was unable to figure out how to get <a href=\"https:\/\/gparted.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>GParted<\/b><\/a> to work, even after it said I had installed it, and Vanilla OS has package managers &#8216;<i>out the ying yang<\/i>&#8216;. Gnome screenshot wasn&#8217;t available either. It was just too new for me to figure out how to get some apps installed, but I am not faulting the Vanilla OS for my own lack of knowledge. The <a href=\"https:\/\/handbook.vanillaos.org\/2022\/11\/18\/first-setup.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>First Setup<\/strong><\/a> section has even more handy pics to follow wid <i>step by step<\/i> easy to understand instructions!<\/p>\n<p>They have one of the best Linux Handbooks I have ever seen \u2014 <i><u><b>if not the best<\/b><\/u><\/i>. \ud83d\udc4d \ud83d\udc4f Go look at the Arch Linux Handbook for an example of what most Linux Handbooks look like. \ud83d\ude28<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.vanillaos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Documentation<\/b><\/a> looks useful also.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vanilla_OS_20_Orchid\"><\/span>Vanilla OS 2.0 Orchid<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>OK&#8230;this is why I didn&#8217;t spend a lot of time testing &#8216;n learning Ubuntu-based <a href=\"https:\/\/vanillaos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Vanilla OS 22.10<\/b><\/a>. \u2014 <em>that is<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/vanillaos.org\/2023\/03\/07\/vanilla-os-2.0-orchid-initial-work.html?ref=its-foss-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Vanilla<\/b> <b>OS 2.0 Orchid<\/b><\/a> will be based on Debian Sid:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1986 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/moving-to-debian.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1077\" height=\"794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/moving-to-debian.jpg 1077w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/moving-to-debian-500x369.jpg 500w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/moving-to-debian-1024x755.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/karmismusingstech.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/moving-to-debian-768x566.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1077px) 100vw, 1077px\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of the high-level goals of Vanilla OS is to be as <em>vanilla<\/em> as possible, so we reverted many of these changes to reach that goal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vanilla_software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>NOTE<\/strong><\/a>: According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eric_S._Raymond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eric S. Raymond<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jargon_File\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The New Hacker&#8217;s Dictionary<\/em><\/a>, &#8220;vanilla&#8221; means more &#8220;default&#8221; than &#8220;ordinary&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I like how these Vanilla OS Developers think \u2014 using &#8216;<i>Orchid as the codename, as Vanilla derives from Orchids<\/i>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span>Conclusion<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been <i>tinkering<\/i> wid Linux since <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>1996<\/b><\/a> because I keep hoping they can finally come up wid a popular Linux Distro. <i>However<\/i>, even tho Linux &amp; Linuxes have been at it for over 30-years, the newcomer ChromeOS already has <a href=\"https:\/\/netmarketshare.com\/operating-system-market-share.aspx?options=%7B%22filter%22%3A%7B%22%24and%22%3A%5B%7B%22deviceType%22%3A%7B%22%24in%22%3A%5B%22Desktop%2Flaptop%22%5D%7D%7D%5D%7D%2C%22dateLabel%22%3A%22Custom%22%2C%22attributes%22%3A%22share%22%2C%22group%22%3A%22platformVersion%22%2C%22sort%22%3A%7B%22share%22%3A-1%7D%2C%22id%22%3A%22platformsDesktopVersions%22%2C%22dateInterval%22%3A%22Monthly%22%2C%22dateStart%22%3A%222022-03%22%2C%22dateEnd%22%3A%222023-03%22%2C%22segments%22%3A%22-1000%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>1.06% Desktop\/laptop OS Market Share<\/b><\/a> \u2014 compared to the 1.61% Market Share of <b>*<\/b><u><b>ALL<\/b><\/u><b>*<\/b> the Linux OSes combined.<\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu at a 0.32% Market Share gets thrashed by ChromeOS in popularity, and Ubuntu is the most popular Linux OS <u>by far<\/u>. &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ChromeOS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>On <\/i><i><b>May 11, 2011<\/b><\/i><i>, Google announced two Chromebooks from Acer and Samsung at Google I\/O<\/i><\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>I rate Linux as a <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.wordpress.com\/special-purpose-linuxes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>Special *PURPOSE*<\/b><\/i><\/a> OS &#8216;n great <i>Secondary<\/i> or <i>Companion<\/i> OS to Windows 10 or 11. My favorites are listed <a href=\"https:\/\/linuxnewbiesince1996.wordpress.com\/karmis-top-10-linux-distros-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><b>HERE<\/b><\/i><\/a>.
